Discover Asian Star Food

If you ever find yourself wandering around Dunedin North feeling hungry and slightly overwhelmed by choices, Asian Star Food at 424 George Street, Dunedin North, Dunedin 9016, New Zealand, is the kind of place that quietly wins you over. I’ve eaten there more than a handful of times, usually after long afternoons at the University of Otago, and each visit has felt consistently satisfying. That kind of reliability is rare, and it’s exactly what keeps locals coming back.

The first thing you notice is the comforting aroma drifting out the door-garlic, soy, ginger, and that unmistakable wok-fired smokiness. Their menu covers a wide range of Asian cuisine, from classic Chinese stir-fries to hearty noodle soups and rice dishes. Think sweet and sour pork, beef chow mein, fried rice loaded with prawns, and steaming bowls of laksa. The variety speaks to both traditional recipes and Kiwi favorites, which is smart considering Dunedin’s diverse crowd of students and families.

On my last visit, I ordered a combination fried rice and a side of dumplings. The rice had that slightly crisp texture you only get from proper wok cooking. According to culinary research from the Culinary Institute of America, high-heat wok techniques help retain both flavor and nutritional value by cooking ingredients quickly and evenly. You can taste that method here. The vegetables still had bite, the egg was fluffy, and the meat wasn’t overcooked. It sounds simple, but that balance is where many takeaways fall short.

Portion sizes are generous without being wasteful. In fact, the New Zealand Ministry of Health recommends balanced meals that combine protein, vegetables, and carbohydrates. Dishes here naturally follow that structure-rice or noodles as a base, lean meats or tofu for protein, and a colorful mix of vegetables. It’s comfort food, yes, but it doesn’t feel heavy or greasy.

One thing I appreciate is how straightforward the ordering process is. Whether you’re dining in or grabbing takeaway, the staff move quickly and efficiently. During peak dinner hours, I’ve noticed they handle high demand without sacrificing quality. That suggests a well-managed kitchen system-clear prep stations, batch cooking where appropriate, and experienced cooks who understand timing. In hospitality, operational flow can make or break a restaurant’s reputation. Here, it clearly works.

Reviews from regular customers often mention value for money, and I’d agree. Students in particular talk about the affordable pricing relative to portion size. In a city where dining budgets can be tight, that balance of cost and quality builds long-term loyalty. I’ve even recommended it to visiting friends who were skeptical about “student area” eateries, and they’ve been pleasantly surprised by the flavor and freshness.

Another strength is consistency. The flavors remain stable across visits, which tells me recipes are standardized. That might sound technical, but consistency is one of the core markers of a trustworthy food establishment. The Restaurant Association of New Zealand emphasizes food safety and standardized preparation as essential industry benchmarks. While I don’t have access to their internal processes, the cleanliness of the front area and the steady quality suggest they take those standards seriously.

The location on George Street also makes it easy to access. It’s close to shops, public transport, and student housing. That convenience adds to the overall experience. You can grab a quick lunch between lectures or settle in for a relaxed dinner after work. It’s not trying to be a fine-dining venue, and that’s part of its charm. Instead, it focuses on delivering flavorful Asian takeaway and casual dining that feels dependable.

Of course, like any busy local spot, wait times can stretch a bit during peak hours. If you’re in a rush, calling ahead helps. But honestly, the food has always been worth a short wait in my experience.

From crispy spring rolls to savory noodle bowls and classic stir-fries, the menu offers something comforting and familiar. It’s the kind of place where you know exactly what you’re getting-hot, freshly cooked Asian dishes served generously and priced fairly. In a neighborhood full of food options, that steady reliability is what sets it apart.

  • This place is easily one of the best Thai restaurants in New Zealand. The food is super delicious and nearly 100% authentic Thai (trust me, I'm Thai). I ate here twice today because it is just so delicious. I recommend you order from a special menu and you will not regret it. Stir fry minced pork with basil was AMAZING!

  • As someone whose favourite food is Thai I am more than excited that I have discovered this gem. I cannot believe how good these meals were better than other places. The price is what did it for me it’s the cheapest thai Iv ever had yet did not effect the overall quality I actually felt the chicken and beef was high quality cuts. at only $15 for each lunch we will be back once a week now and look forward to trying everything on the menu. • 06/04/2023 Very authentic thai food, perfect balance of flavour with generous portion. Very worth it of the price. Tried the vermicelli seafood salad and it was so good!! The 3 dollar herbal jelly drink saved my life from dying from the spice. Their crispy pork basil is a must to try!!!! So tasty. Will come back again to try more food! Great service and environment. Super clean and nice 13/04/2023 The Tom kha is devinneeeeesooooo gooooooooood, perfect for a cold day!!!! (Kind of like a milder version of tom yum) Pad thai is super flavourful, very big portion!! Ribs are very juicy, great side dish This place is becoming our favourite, will come back again to try other dishes! 15/04/2023 Back again so soon to try new things The green curry is super creamy and savoury, matched perfectly well with som tum (a spicy sour savoury salad) which was a experience for your palate!! Showed it in the picture how we devoured the whole thing want to be back for tom kha again haha~ 21/04 Indeed we came back!! Tried cashew beef with tom kha, as good as before, soooo delicious and consistent with flavour. Favourite dish for us!! The thai ice tea is really tasty, kind of taste like plum! • A good restaurant for a quick lunch. A wide range of Asian dishes, predominantly Thai, but they also offer other Asian dishes. As with many restaurants, lunch prices are not expensive, and you pay a little more for dinner. I had the Prawns Pad Thai noodles, and it was very good. Six medium vnami Prawns with tasty noodles and more than sufficient for lunch. Also had the cashews Prawns lunch on Saturday, and it was very good. Happy to visit again. Thank you.

  • Probably the best tasting Thai restaurant in Dunedin (operated by Thai) after the change of ownership From Fish Hooks. Been there almost 7 times and was satisfied all the time. Taste can be too heavy for some as they do not shy away from the flavors but it's really good as a whole. Friendly owner as well. Recommend the Tom yum Some of the photos are special of the day and are not always available.

  • If there were 10 stars, I would have give them full 10. The best and authentic Thai food I have ever had in Dunedin!! (Approved from Thai person haha). The chef which is the owner of the restaurant are all Thai and they’re such a lovely people. I sometimes order something out of the menu and they still happy to do it for me. Must try (I would say everything). Highly recommend

  • Great Thai food for lunch! We loved the Stir fried basil pork and the Pad Thai! It was delicious and the portions were generous for the price. Previously, we came for dinner an ordered the stewed pork leg and the crispy pork and they were very tasty but the meat had a bit too much fat. So I’d recommend ordering dishes with minced meat or chicken. It is more expensive for dinner but still worth trying out! Service was nice both times we went.
